Nobody reads your LinkedIn post. Not the middle. Not the end. Not the brilliant insight you buried in paragraph four.
They read the first two lines. Maybe. If you're lucky.
LinkedIn cuts your post at around 210 characters and slaps a "…see more" button on it. If those first two lines don't make someone stop mid-scroll, your post is dead. The rest might as well not exist.
I've spent the last year studying what makes LinkedIn posts blow up . the ones that crack 5K, 10K, sometimes 50K impressions. The pattern is always the same. The hook does the heavy lifting. Always.
A weak hook with great content? 200 views. A killer hook with decent content? 5,000. Every time.

Why Your Hook Matters More Than Anything Else
LinkedIn's algorithm in 2026 is obsessed with one thing: dwell time. That's how long someone pauses on your post before scrolling past.
Here's the chain reaction. Someone stops on your post → dwell time goes up → LinkedIn thinks "this must be good" → shows it to more people → more people stop → more dwell time → even more distribution.
And it all starts with two lines.
Posts that earn a "see more" click get roughly 40% more impressions than those that don't. Think about that. Same content, same value, same expertise . but 40% more reach just because the opening line was good enough to earn a click.
You get about 210 characters. Two lines on desktop. Three on mobile. That's your entire audition.
The 5 Hook Formats That Actually Work
I've broken down hundreds of viral LinkedIn posts. Not the fluffy "thought leadership" posts with 12 likes from coworkers. The ones that genuinely move the needle . thousands of impressions, dozens of real comments, actual DMs.
Five patterns show up over and over.
1. The Contrarian Hook
Pick something everyone in your industry believes and challenge it. This works because people who disagree WILL read your post. They can't help it. They need to see your argument so they can fight it in the comments.
Examples:
"Stop networking. It's the worst career advice you've ever received."
"Hustle culture didn't make me successful. Quitting did."
"Your MBA is worth less than a 90-day side project. Here's why."
The key: you actually need a good argument. Contrarian without substance is just clickbait. Contrarian WITH substance is how you build a reputation.
2. The Personal Story Hook
Drop the reader into a moment. No context, no setup . just the scene.
Examples:
"I got fired on a Tuesday. By Friday, I had 3 job offers."
"Last year I turned down a $200K offer. Everyone thought I was crazy."
"My worst client taught me my best lesson."
Why it works: Stories work because we're wired for them. The reader needs to know what happened next. It's almost involuntary . they click "see more" before they even realize it.
3. The Statistic Hook
Numbers stop the scroll because they stand out in a sea of words. But the number has to be surprising. "70% of people use LinkedIn" is boring. "91% of LinkedIn users never post" makes you think.
Examples:
"91% of LinkedIn users never post. Here's what the other 9% know."
"I grew from 500 to 50,000 followers in 6 months. Here's the exact playbook."
"Only 3% of job applications get a response. Unless you do this."
Why it works: Specificity creates credibility. "I grew my audience" is forgettable. "I grew from 500 to 50,000 in 6 months" feels real.
4. The Question Hook
Ask something your audience can't answer in two seconds. If the answer is obvious, the question is too weak.
Examples:
"What's the one skill you wish you'd learned 5 years ago?"
"Would you take a 50% pay cut for a job you love?"
"What if everything you know about productivity is wrong?"
Why it works: Questions activate a pattern-completion instinct in the brain. We literally can't NOT try to answer them. That mental pause = dwell time. And dwell time = reach.
5. The Bold Claim Hook
Not controversial . just confident. You make a statement so specific and definitive that the reader thinks "can they back this up?" and clicks to find out.
Examples:
"The best marketers in 2026 won't use ads. They'll use content."
"You don't need a personal brand. You need a point of view."
"LinkedIn is the last social platform where organic reach still works."
Why it works: Bold claims position you as someone who has strong opinions earned through experience. That's exactly who people want to follow on LinkedIn.
How to Format Your Hook
- 1.Keep it under 210 characters. I know I keep repeating this. It's that important. Count your characters before you post. Every single time.
- 2.Use a line break after your hook. White space is your friend. It creates a visual pause that makes the hook stand out from the rest of the post.
- 3.Never start with "I'm excited to announce." These might be the four most skipped words on LinkedIn. Nobody cares that you're excited. Lead with something they care about.
- 4.Skip hashtags in the hook. They add visual noise and scream "this is marketing content" instead of "this is someone with something interesting to say."
- 5.Preview before you post. Seriously. What looks good in the LinkedIn editor looks different in the feed. Use our Post Preview to see exactly what your audience will see.
