Follower count means nothing if nobody interacts with your posts.

Engagement rate is the real metric. It tells you whether people care about what you're posting, not just how many people happen to follow you.

    How to calculate it

    The formula: (Reactions + Comments + Shares + Clicks) / Impressions × 100

    Example: 50 reactions, 15 comments, 5 shares, 200 clicks, 10,000 impressions = 2.7%

LinkedIn doesn't show this number directly. You have to calculate it from post analytics.

What "good" looks like in 2026

    • Below 1%: Low. Your content isn't resonating.
    • 1-2%: Average. Room to improve.
    • 2-4%: Good. You're connecting with your audience.
    • 4-6%: Excellent. Top-tier creator territory.
    • 6%+: Exceptional. Usually seen with smaller, highly engaged audiences.

One important note: engagement rate naturally decreases as your audience grows. 5% with 1,000 followers is harder to maintain at 50,000 followers.

    What the algorithm rewards

Dwell time. How long people spend reading. Longer, well-formatted posts that hold attention get boosted.

Comments over likes. A comment signals deeper engagement and carries roughly 15x more weight than a like. "Great post!" barely registers anymore. Thoughtful multi-sentence comments are what matter.

Engagement velocity. How fast engagement happens after posting. 10 comments in the first hour beats 20 comments over 24 hours.

Conversation depth. Back-and-forth threads in the comments are gold. Reply to every comment to double your comment count and signal active discussion.

10 ways to improve your engagement rate

Write better hooks. The first 2 lines determine everything. Use the Hook Generator. Read the full hook guide.

Share specific insights. "I analyzed 100 cold emails and found 3 patterns" beats "Here are some email tips." Specificity creates engagement.

Tell stories. Personal experiences get roughly 3x more engagement than generic advice.

Format for scanability. Short paragraphs, line breaks, lists. Follow our formatting tips.

Keep it under 1,300 characters. The sweet spot for most posts.

End with a question. Direct questions invite comments. See CTA examples.

Reply to every comment. This doubles your comment count and signals to the algorithm that your post is generating conversation.

Post at peak times. Check best posting times.

Post consistently. 3-5 times per week builds momentum.

Analyze and iterate. Use Rate My Post before publishing. Track what works. Do more of it.

    Engagement by content type

Carousels: highest (3-5%). Learn how to create them.

    Text-only: strong when well-written (2-4%).

    Image + text: moderate (1.5-3%).

Video: high dwell time but lower comment rates (1-3%).

External links: lowest (0.5-1.5%). LinkedIn deprioritizes outbound links.

    Stop chasing likes

Likes are the participation trophy of LinkedIn. Optimize for comments and DMs. That's where real opportunities come from.
